Kettlebell for Ballistic Exercises – Kettlebells for Cardiovascular, Strength & Flexibility Training


The kettlebell or girya  is a cast-iron weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Kettlebells are Russian training tools that have gained popularity as an excellent form of exercise. Unlike traditional dumbbells, the kettlebell’s centre of mass is extended beyond the hand, similar to Indian clubs or ishi sashi. This facilitates ballistic and swinging movements. The bells are made of cast iron and look a bit like bowling balls with handles attached to the top. They come in a variety of weights which are used in a series of swinging movements to obtain a strength and cardiovascular workout.

This combination makes the exercise partially aerobic and more similar to High-intensity interval training rather than to traditional weight lifting. The advantage to using a kettlebell is that you are able to get both a strength workout and cardio workout at the same time. It makes it very easy to squeeze in a high-intensity, full-body workout in a shorter period of time.
