Posture is the body position. It may be static or dynamic such as sitting, standing, lying down, walking, running, reading, etc.
There are different views about posture. Physical educationists say that ‘posture is the tool of mechanical efficiency of a body’ i.e. ‘the body position which causes minimum stress to muscles, where maximum output of the physical efficiency can be attained. Doctors say, ‘posture is the sound physiological balance of body’. Actors say, ‘posture is a tool to express emotions and attitude’. Well, we can conclude that a good posture helps the body to function effectively. Good posture reflects the personality of an individual. Moreover it shows the emotions, expressions and the attitude of mind. Thus posture is more than the physical condition of an individual. Good posture is the position of body held without any sense of effort. In a good standing posture the weight is equally distributed over both legs and the back is straight to produce the least fatigue. The efficiency of a body depends on good posture. It is directly related to the health status of an individual.
The first image of personality comes through good posture. A good posture makes a person appear smart, good looking and attractive. Good posture of a body reflects the health status of an individual. A good posture proves the psychological balance of body and mind. It improves the activeness of mind and leads to optimum development. Good posture causes less strain and pain in the joints. A good physique reflects good social qualities. Good posture ensures proper functioning of the body systems. Good posture helps to improve skills which lead to more perfection in any activity we perform. It also makes our movements graceful. It provides optimum opportunity to an individual to improve physical efficiency.
Bad posture causes many health problems. It reduces the physical output or efficiency to a great extent. It leads to psychological stress. It causes many postural problems. Regular exercise with rowing machine, treadmills etc, provides proper shape and posture to the body. Good posture involves training the body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments. Maintaining a good posture requires strong postural muscles. It requires normal motion in the joints, and good muscle flexibility. A good posture helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces. It prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. Prevents backache and muscular pain and contributes to good physical appearance. Most people focus on their diet and exercise schedules with equipments like kettlebells, rowing machine, spin bike, recumbent bikes or treadmills, but often ignore posture. Poor posture spoils the image of a person having an otherwise healthy body. It is important to pay attention on having a good posture as it is quite beneficial for the overall health of a person apart from good exercise with exercise bikes, cross trainer or elliptical trainer. The time to build good posture is when you are exercising. It helps your flexibility, prevents sore backs or necks, and helps make your workouts more efficient.
