The dumbbell, a type of free weight, is a piece of equipment used in weight training. It can be used individually or in pairs (one for each hand). “Dumbbells” as a word originated in Tudor England – referring to equipment simulating the action of a bell rope for the purpose of developing technique, and especially strength, for the purpose of practicing English bell ringing, but without making a noise (hence dumb). When strongmen started to make their own equipment, they kept the name, even though the shape and form changed. By the early 17th century, the familiar shape of the dumbbell, with two equal weights attached to a handle, had appeared.

Dumbbells are proven effective to provide a full body workout by targeting the arm, shoulder, chest, abdominal, back, leg muscles and even the ligaments.  Dumbbells also help to firm, tone, strengthen, and build muscles.  Because of these factors, anyone can benefit from dumbbell exercises. Dumbbells are great for building shoulder muscles as well. You can use dumbbells to build biceps muscles, triceps, and the forearm muscles. You also don’t need a lot of space either, as a set of dumbbells can fit easily into a corner in the house or in a small room.

Strength exercises elevate your bone density and ensure your muscles to be protected, thus it helps you avoid tear and wear. Your bones are at their strongest. .It takes you less prone to osteoporosis. Dumbbell exercises will strengthen your bones, thus giving you stronger resistance to be away from illnesses. They also assist your body to control blood pressure and high levels of sugar.

Dumbbells are inexpensive, versatile and easy-to-use weights that let you create a variety of workouts to improve your health. Depending on the amount of weight you use, number of repetitions you do and pace at which you use them, dumbbells can help you improve cardiovascular fitness, burn calories, build muscle or increase muscular endurance for sports.
